Roof Stain Causes

Roof stain causes

Black algae stains are mainly caused by the growth of air-borne algae known as Gloeocapsa magma, mold and mildew. This type of algae can appear on anyone's roof. The algae thrives in warm humid climates and normally is first noticed on the northern facing portions of your roof where you will find the most shade and moisture content. As it rains, the algae is transported down the roof, giving the appearance of black streaks. Once the algae appears on your roof, it will continue to grow and spread until it is cleaned. The algae will never go away on its own, it will most likely only become even worse over time.

Asphalt shingles are made with crushed limestone to give them weight and durability properties in order to protect your home against the elements. This limestone filler is used as the food source that algae need to survive. The algae will take root and feed on the limestone filler within the shingle dislodging the protective roof granules and exposing your roof to potential damage.A blacked stained roof is not only an eyesore, but a sign that you have algae literally eating it alive, taking years off its life.

Not only are black algae roof stains unsightly, but it can affect your home in other ways too. The algae can prevent your roof from properly reflecting heat from the sun, potentially causing your homes heating and cooling costs to increase. Once your shingles lose their ability to reflect heat they also tend to deteriorate at an increased rate.

Almost one out of every three roofs are replaced early because the home owner was unaware that roof stains could be cleaned or neglected to clean the roof and the roof algae, mold and mildew damaged the roof beyond repair. You wouldn't replace your vinyl siding due to algae, mold, and mildew stains would you? Then why spend thousands of dollars replacing a roof that can be cleaned for a fraction of the cost? Keep in mind that the stains on your roof are an environmental issue, replacing it will not prevent them from reappearing on your new roof over time.

We are an environmentally responsible company and care about the safety of your home, family, pets, and landscaping. That’s why we developed an alternative to the normal Bleach roof cleaning products. Roof Resolve is a biodegradable and safe roof cleaner based on the power of hydrogen peroxide. It won't harm anything that is not a fungus. Unlike most roof cleaning products our product is not made with Bleach (sodium hypochlorite) or lye (sodium hydroxide). Using these types of harsh chemicals could potentially stain, dry out or damage your shingles, remove the finish on aluminum gutters, stain painted surfaces, damage plants and grass, or create health hazards for your pets and children.
